A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.
It is likely to intensify further and move west-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, close to North of Sri Lanka in the subsequent two days.
The public, particularly those living in the Eastern and Northern provinces, are requested to be vigilant in this regard.

Cloudy skies can be expected over most parts of the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva and North-western provinces and Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere in the evening or night.
Heavy showers of about 100mm are likely at some places in the Northern, Eastern, North-central and Uva provinces and Matale district. A few showers are likely over the western coastal areas in the morning.
Fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and Matale and Trincomalee districts.
Misty conditions can be expected in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces in the morning.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Naval and fishing communities, engaging in activities in the Bay of Bengal are requested to be vigilant of heavy rains and rough seas.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island.
Winds will be Northeast in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Galle via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai, Puttalam and Colombo. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph and it will increase up to 50 kmph at times in these sea areas. Winds will be variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Galle via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai Puttalam and Colombo will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
