Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has been elected as new Speaker of Sri Lanka, following the resignation of former Speaker Asoka Ranwala on December 13.
Wickramaratne’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya, congratulating the new Speaker said that his appointment reflects the new government’s commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka also extending congratulations to the new Speaker on behalf of the opposition, expressed hope that the Speaker will uphold his responsibilities and safeguard the new political culture. (Newswire)
