The Western Province retained its position as the largest contributor to Sri Lanka’s economy in 2023, accounting for 43.7% of nominal GDP, despite a marginal decrease compared to the previous year.
- According to data released by the Central Bank, the province remained dominant in both the Industry and Services sectors, while the North Western and Central provinces secured the second and third positions, contributing 10.9% and 10.3%, respectively.
- The shares of the Central, North Central, Northern, and Southern provinces increased in 2023 compared to 2022. Further, the nominal GDP of all provinces grew in 2023, albeit at a slower pace than the previous year, the Central Bank said.
- North Western Province continued to lead in Agriculture, contributing 19.6% in 2023, followed by the Southern (13.5%) and Central (12.4%) provinces.
- Meanwhile, the Western Province (48.7%) maintained its strong presence in Industry activities, accounting for nearly half of the overall Industry value. The North Western (12.3%) and Central provinces (9.3%) were the next largest contributors to Industry.
- The Western Province also accounted for the largest share of Services activities (45.9%), followed by the Central Province (10.4%) and Southern Province (9.9%) as the next highest contributors. (Newswire)
