Sri Lanka Police says it will take measures in the future to request the courts to either revoke or suspend the licences for 12 months for those arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Police have, therefore, requested the public to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.
The request has been made as the Police announced that legal action was taken against 395 drunk drivers arrested in the 24 hours ending at 06.00 am on 26 December during the special operation of vehicle inspections.
During the special operation, 50 drivers were arrested for reckless driving, 120 for high speed, 1262 for traffic violations, 682 for offences related to driving licences, and 5441 for other traffic offences.
The Police said legal action was initiated against a total of 7950 drivers during this period.
The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) had issued a directive to launch an islandwide special traffic operation from 20 December to reduce traffic accidents during the festive season. (Newswire)
