Private bus unions have cautioned police to adhere to the Motor Traffic Act and avoid measures that could lead to a bus strike.
The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association expressed concerns about inspections under the “Clean Sri Lanka” program, particularly the deployment of plainclothes officers on buses.
Gemunu Wijeratne, the association’s chairman, said discussions with the Acting Inspector General of Police are planned for next week, during which the union will address its grievances. A strike initially set for next week has been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the talks.
The “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative involves special vehicle inspections by police, with officers in civilian attire monitoring buses for traffic violations.
