The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has issued a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, outlining its concerns and recommendations regarding the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court. The BASL emphasized the importance of transparency, merit, and adherence to legal and ethical standards in such appointments.
In the letter dated January 8, 2025, the BASL highlighted the vital role of the judiciary in upholding the rights of citizens and ensuring the rule of law. It stated that the process of appointing judges must be based on seniority, eligibility, and merit to maintain public trust in the judicial system.
The BASL also pointed out the current existence of four vacancies in the Supreme Court, stressing that filling these positions could have a significant impact on the judiciary and the broader legal system. It urged the government to follow criteria ensuring that appointments reflect integrity, independence, and competence.
