A document outlining 11 key requests from provincial journalists was handed over to the Minister of Health and Media during a discussion with the Colombo Journalists’ Association on Wednesday (15).
The requests included a call for stricter issuance of journalist identification cards, a comprehensive training program for all journalists, and financial support for a low-interest loan scheme to facilitate the purchase of essential equipment.
The proposal suggested that journalist ID cards be issued exclusively to active journalists to maintain professional standards. Additionally, the association highlighted the need for regular workshops and training programs, including long-term and short-term sessions, to enhance journalists’ skills and professionalism.
To address financial challenges, the association requested the media ministry’s assistance in securing collaboration with the Ministry of Finance to implement a low-interest loan program for purchasing media equipment.
Responding to the requests, the Minister expressed appreciation for the journalists’ contributions to the industry and agreed to prioritize their needs.
The meeting was attended by Colombo Journalists’ Association President Nishantha Priyadarshana, General Secretary Chathura Padmasanka, senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Media, and other representatives of the association. (Newswire)
