President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that the government will reclaim all official residences provided to former presidents.
Speaking on the matter, he revealed that the rent for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s residence amounts to Rs. 4.6 million per month, excluding the land value. He stated that former presidents will have the option to either vacate the residences or pay the rent themselves.
“As per existing laws, former presidents are entitled to either a residence or 1/3 of their salary. The government will now limit this benefit to a cash allowance of Rs. 30,000, which is 1/3 of their salary,” the President said while addressing a meeting in Katukurunda.
He further stated that all ministerial bungalows, apart from the President’s House in Colombo, the President’s House in Kandy, and Temple Trees, will be repurposed for hotel projects or other suitable uses. (NewsWire)
