The government plans to revisit Sri Lanka’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to implement additional relief measures aimed at easing the financial burden on the public, Deputy Minister of Finance Harshana Suriyapperuma said.
The Minister made these comments in Parliament today in response to a question raised by SJB MP Chithral Fernando.
Acknowledging that the IMF’s conditions have placed significant hardships on citizens, the Minister said that the government has outlined several initiatives designed to mitigate these challenges.
Raising the income tax threshold to Rs. 150,000, exempting Value-Added Tax (VAT) on dairy products to address nutrition needs of children, allocating Rs. 6,000 per child to help with the purchase of school supplies, including children not covered by the Aswesuma welfare program and increasing the fertilizer subsidy to Rs. 25,000 to support agricultural production were among the measures described by the Minister.
