Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath says there may be a possibility for a drop in vehicle prices when imports are recommenced from February this year.
Speaking during an interview with local media, Minister Herath said vehicle imports will recommence under three phases, with the last phase for private vehicles.
He said vehicle imports will be allowed while protecting the foreign exchange and that there might be changes to tax duties.
The minister further said when imported vehicle are releases to the local market, based on the current competitive prices, there maybe a drop in vehicle prices.
Minister Vijitha Herath also confirmed that the government intends to provide vehicles for all 225 Member of Parliament during the five year tenure.
Stating that there were two alternatives to use the vehicle, the minister said the MPs can either use the given vehicle and return it to the government at the end of 05 years or at the end of their tenure pay the current price of the vehicle to the government and take ownership. (Newswire)
