Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa highlighted a number of challenges faced by individuals across various sectors of the country, calling for prompt solutions to these pressing issues.
Fulfill the Promise of a 33% Electricity Bill Reduction
Addressing Parliament, Premadasa said that although the government promised to reduce electricity bills by one-third, the minister in charge indicated that an increase might be inevitable. Furthermore, despite the Public Utilities Commission reducing electricity bills by 20% based on public opinion, the Ceylon Electricity Board stated it could not lower the bills for six months, requiring approval from the Ministry of Finance. Therefore, he urged the government to implement the 20% reduction immediately and fulfill the election promise of a 33% reduction.
Ensure Public Safety
Premadasa highlighted the alarming increase in crimes such as murders and drug trafficking, with 121 shootings and 60 deaths reported in 2024. He called on the government to focus on addressing these issues effectively.
Resolve Passport Delays
Premadasa noted that delays in issuing passports have worsened, even with the introduction of online systems. Long queues persist, necessitating urgent solutions to streamline the process.
Address the Palm Oil Import Issue
He emphasized irregularities in the palm oil import sector, where raw palm oil imported since January 2024 is taxed at an 18% VAT and a 2.5% social security levy. However, processed oil sold to the market evades taxes, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 5 billion. Premadasa demanded immediate solutions to rectify this issue.
Expedite Container Clearance
The Opposition Leader stated that delays in container clearance at the port, exacerbated by truck congestion, have caused ships to bypass the Colombo Port. With around 4,000 containers pending clearance, he stressed the need for swift solutions. Additionally, he called for the restoration of the 15% interest rate benefits previously enjoyed by senior citizens, which have dropped to 7-8% since 2022.
Support Safari Jeep Drivers
Premadasa also highlighted the need to address issues faced by safari jeep drivers, whose income depends on tourism at national parks. He requested that unnecessary regulations applied to three-wheelers and buses not be imposed on safari jeeps, given their importance to the tourism industry.
Provide Jobs for Unemployed Graduates
With approximately 45,000 unemployed graduates in the country, Premadasa urged the government to honor its election promise to provide jobs. He also suggested employing the 22,000 development officers as teachers to address the teacher shortage.
Address Issues in Nursing Training and Teacher Recruitment
He pointed out that, despite gazetting 706 teacher vacancies and holding examinations, the recruitment process has been delayed. He called for the immediate release of results and timely recruitment. Additionally, he requested attention to resolving issues in nursing training and expediting university admissions for diploma holders.
Resolve Problems Faced by Grama Niladharis
Premadasa highlighted challenges faced by Grama Niladharis, including issues with allowances, service regulations, and census-related responsibilities. He urged the government to address these issues, given the significant role these officers play at the village level. (Newswire)
