Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasized the importance of fostering stronger ties between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom during his address at the UK-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Association event held at the Sri Lankan Parliament.

Speaking in the presence of distinguished guests, including Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne and UK High Commissioner Andrew Patrick, Premadasa lauded the historical contributions of the United Kingdom to Sri Lanka’s development.

He expressed gratitude for the UK’s support over the years, particularly through programs like the Department for International Development (DFID), which he noted played a vital role in Sri Lanka’s economic and social progress.

Premadasa highlighted the significance of the revived Parliamentary Friendship Association in enhancing bilateral relations, promoting legislative collaboration, and nurturing ties between the two nations.

Addressing Sri Lanka’s current economic challenges, Premadasa appealed to the UK for assistance in helping the nation overcome its financial difficulties. “We hope this initiative revitalizes the bilateral relationship, fostering closer interactions between our legislatures and enabling Sri Lanka to achieve prosperity, equitable growth, and social justice,” he stated.

The Opposition Leader also encouraged British investments in Sri Lanka, assuring full facilitation and support for projects across all regions of the country. “We welcome British investors and governmental and non-governmental support to promote Sri Lanka’s path towards inclusive growth and shared prosperity,” he said.
