Woman arrested for hanging a dog to death over mediation board verdict

A 48-year-old woman from Mankulam in the Northern Province has been arrested in connection to hanging a dog to death.

Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that she was arrested in connection to the incident, of which a photograph had gained attention on social media recently.

He further said that the dog had been hanged to death by being tied to a tree by the neck using a rope, on Saturday (Jan 25).

Investigations conducted by the Mankulam Police had led to the arrest of a 48-year-old woman today. 

Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said she has been arrested under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, No. 13 of 1907, and will be produced in court.

According to media reports, a mediation board in Oddusuddan, Mullaitivu District, had issued a verdict to hang the dog as it had bitten a goat, to resolve a conflict between two groups of people. (Newswire)
