Two Indian fishermen have been injured after the firearm of a Sri Lanka Navy official had accidentally discharged while attempts were made to arrest a group of Indian fishermen for violating the international maritime border.
According to the Police, the group of Indian fishermen had entered Sri Lankan waters and were engaged in poaching off the coast of Kankesanthurai last night.
While attempting to apprehend the fishermen, a tussle had broken out between two fishermen and a Navy officer during which the latter’s official firearm had accidentally discharged.
The two Indian fishermen had sustained injuries to their feet in the incident and have been admitted to the Jaffna Hospital for treatment.
The remaining 11 Indian Fishermen along with their multi-day trawler and fishing equipment have been taken into custody by the Sri Lanka Navy.
The Kankesanthurai Police is conducting further investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
