President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that a budgetary proposal will be made to establish a national festival that brings together all communities in Sri Lanka, celebrating all cultures, values, and traditions.
The President made these comments speaking in Jaffna, stating that Sri Lankans always have separate celebrations and questioned whether there should be one day for everyone to celebrate together.
“We always have functions that are different from each other. Don’t we need one day to celebrate together?” he questioned.
The President said that he envisions for a festival that unites Tamil, Sinhala, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Catholic, and Islamic communities.
The festival, he said will be scheduled for October, and showcase a shared culture through food, lifestyle, music, drama, and arts.
“Even though our generations fought wars, we will not allow our children’s generations to wage wars,” the President said, adding that the initiative aims to strengthen unity between the North and South. (Newswire)
