The historic Galle Fort Post Office, one of Sri Lanka’s first five post offices, is set to be restored following concerns over its deteriorating condition.
The building, constructed during the Dutch colonial era, has suffered extensive damage due to a lack of maintenance and conservation.
Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa who recently inspected the site, expressed concern over the neglect of a structure with both historical and architectural significance.
The Minister was accompanied by local representatives, postal officials, and Urban Development Authority officers.
Speaking to officials of the Postal Service, the Minister stressed on the need to protect national heritage.
He also directed officials to develop a plan to introduce new services, such as printing facilities for stamps and Vesak greeting cards.
Discussions were also held on upgrading post offices in tourist areas of the Southern Province to serve as attractions. (Newswire)
