Former Sri Lankan cricketer Hashan Tillakaratne has stepped down as the head coach of the Bangladesh women’s cricket team following their failure to secure direct qualification for the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.
Tillakaratne, who took charge in October 2022, confirmed his decision during Bangladesh’s recent tour of the West Indies, where the team suffered series defeats in both ODIs and T20Is. His contract had been extended until the tour, but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was already considering alternatives.
“During the tour of West Indies, he informed us that he is not willing to continue anymore,” said Habibul Bashar, the BCB women’s wing in-charge.
Under Tillakaratne’s guidance, Bangladesh secured notable achievements, including a historic home series win against Pakistan, a drawn ODI series against a full-strength India, and their first-ever victory over the West Indies in 2025. However, their inconsistency on the global stage, particularly in ICC tournaments, led to scrutiny. (NewsWire)
