The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to appoint a committee to refine the draft bill on the prevention of terrorism, aiming to establish a comprehensive legal framework for national security.

The Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 48 of 1979 was introduced to address threats to national security and public order. In 2022, amendments were made under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 12 of 2022 as an interim measure toward enacting broader legislation. A draft bill was later prepared but faced challenges in the Supreme Court.

Following this, the Legal Draftsman’s Department revised the draft with necessary amendments. To ensure further improvements, the Cabinet approved a proposal by the minister of justice and national integrity to appoint a committee chaired by President’s Counsel Riyanzi Arsakularathne. This committee will conduct an in-depth review of the final draft and recommend suitable revisions to strengthen the legislation.

The government aims to introduce a structured legal framework to address evolving security challenges while ensuring compliance with national and international legal standards. (NewsWire)
