President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today assured that all necessary steps will be taken to eliminate underworld activities, although the process will take time.
Addressing the first meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Defence of the 10th Parliament, the President said that underworld elements have infiltrated certain public security institutions.
Measures will also be taken to enhance court security with modern technology, reassess military-occupied lands across the country, and explore the economic potential of military-run businesses.
The President further stressed the need to eliminate religious and ethnic extremism from politics and prevent its exploitation for political gains.
Additionally, he directed officials to expedite the establishment of a National Disaster Management Committee.
