Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called on the authorities to tighten security for judges, as well as the public, and especially journalists.
Addressing the Parliament today, MP Sajith Premadasa said that protection must be given to journalists such as Chamuditha Samarawickrama who are facing severe threats at present.
Highlighting yesterday’s shooting inside a courthouse, the Opposition Leader said the government must give extra attention to ensuring the security of Judges, journalists, Parliamentarians, and the public.
“If the judicial system collapses, then the state will face a collapse in society. I request the government not to remove the security provided for judges. I also request them to make more efforts to ensure public safety,” he added.
Meanwhile, senior Sri Lankan journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama says four persons interviewed by him have been killed under mysterious circumstances in the recent past.
Citing concerns over the incidents, the senior journalist has requested authorities to provide protection for journalists.
His comments refer to the 39-year-old victim of the recent Middeniya shooting, identified as Aruna Vidanagamage, alias ‘Kajja’, who had been interviewed by the journalist days before his death.
Vidanagamage had previously identified himself as an associate of the Rajapaksa family during a YouTube interview with senior journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama. (Newswire)
