Cabinet approval has been granted for the implementation of the seasonal worker program introduced by South Korea under the E-8 visa category, as a pilot project in Sri Lanka.

According to the government, the seasonal worker program has been introduced by the South Korean Government under the E-8 visa category to address the scarcity of labour in the agriculture and fisheries sectors in their country.

Thereby, an opportunity has been provided for South Korea’s provincial council institutes to recruit foreign workers legally for the short term.

Accordingly, a consensus has been expressed by the provincial and municipal councils (states) of South Korea to establish cooperation between both parties to provide opportunities for Sri Lankan workers under this program.

As such, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Foreign Employment to sign the Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant states of South Korea for the implementation of the pilot project.

Under the proposed pilot project, Sri Lankan workers will be eligible to serve for up to three (3) terms within a maximum period of 3 years. (Newswire)
