Arjun Aloysius, director of W.M. Mendis Distilleries, and two others have been released today after serving a prison sentence for tax evasion.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court had sentenced them to six months in prison for defaulting on Rs. 3.5 billion in Value Added Tax (VAT) owed by the company.
The case was filed by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) over unpaid taxes from 2016 to 2019.
Although they were sentenced to six months, Aloysius and another individual were released today after serving four months, according to prison regulations. (NewsWire)
