The Ministry of Education has announced the successful completion of school uniform material distribution for the year 2025, ensuring that all eligible students receive their uniforms free of charge. This initiative covers 4,640,086 students from 10,096 government and government-aided schools, along with 822 approved Pirivenas across the country.
The total required 12 million meters of fabric was provided as a full grant by the People’s Republic of China, making 2025 the first year where the entire uniform requirement has been met through a foreign donation. Previously, China covered 70% of the requirement in 2023 and 80% in 2024.
The government has been providing school uniforms free of charge since 1992 without interruption. Between 2015 and 2020, students received vouchers to purchase uniforms, but the policy shifted back to providing textiles directly in subsequent years.
The 2025 grant, valued at approximately Rs. 5,171 million, underscores China’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s education sector. The Ministry confirmed that all distributed materials have reached the students, ensuring a smooth start to the academic year. (NewsWire)
