President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his last budget speech yesterday, highlighted seven major state-owned enterprises that continue to operate at a loss, contributing significantly to the country’s financial burden. The institutions and their respective losses or debts are as follows:
1. Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation
– Loss (Last Year): Rs. 256 million
– Debt: Rs. 1,834 million
2. Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation
– Loss (Last Year): Rs. 152 million
– Debt: Rs. 1,603 million
3. Independent Television Network (ITN)
– Debt: Rs. 1,476 million
4. Lanka Sugar Company
– Debt: Rs. 11,165 million
5. State Plantation Corporation
– Debt: Rs. 3,216 million
6. MILCO
– Debt: Rs. 15,090 million
7. SriLankan Airlines
– Debt: Nearly Rs. 340 billion
