Plans are underway to increase domestic flights to encourage local tourists, Minister of Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake said.
Minister Bimal Rathnayake said essential steps will be taken to amend the necessary laws in this regard.
He made the remarks during an observation tour of the Jaffna International Airport in Palali.
“A preliminary decision has been made, especially for domestic tourists from Sri Lanka. As of now, those living in Jaffna arrive only at Katunayake Airport. Therefore, we need to develop the Palali Airport to improve domestic flights. We hope to make some changes to the laws regarding air travel in Sri Lanka to make the rules suitable for domestic flights. If that happens, we think private aircraft owners in Sri Lanka can bring planes here for those companies. They can serve the people while earning some profit,” Minister Bimal Rathnayake said.
