President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says a defense cooperation agreement was signed with India recently with the intention of streamlining and formalizing operations already in progress.
Addressing a public meeting in Galle yesterday (07 Apr), President Dissanayake addressed concerns raised on the defence cooperation agreement with India.
The President revealed that joint operations and training sessions with India were already in progress, clarifying that the recent defence agreement with India simply formalizes these ongoing activities.
Highlighting the importance of regional protection, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the need for support from more advanced countries to move forward.
The Government of Sri Lanka signed a defence cooperation agreement with India during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to Sri Lanka.
“I am grateful to President Dissanayaka for his sensitivity towards India’s interests. We welcome the important agreements made in the area of Defence Cooperation. We have also agreed to work together on the Colombo Security Conclave and Security Cooperation in the Indian Ocean,” PM Modi said, commenting on the agreement, during his visit to Sri Lanka.
