Sri Lanka Cricket legend Sanath Jayasuriya and Sports Minister Sunil Gamage today visited Jaffna as part of efforts to establish an international cricket stadium in the Northern Province.

The duo inspected a plot of land in Mandathivu, which has already been identified and acquired for the proposed stadium.

Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Manada Yahampath also joined the visit and was present during the inspection of the site.

During the visit, the officials evaluated the feasibility of the location and discussed preliminary plans for the development of the facility, which aims to boost cricket in the Northern region.

Sanath Jayasuriya, who currently serves as the Head Coach of the national team and Director of the Sri Lanka Cricket High Performance Center, made a request last week to the visiting Indian Prime Minister for financial assistance to support the construction of the stadium.

“This initiative is expected to provide greater opportunities for youth in the Northern Province and enhance cricket infrastructure,” Sports Minister Sunil Gamage told NewsWire.

“We will go ahead with this project. The source of funds is what we need to finalize now. I also made a request to the Indian High Commissioner last month, and Sanath made a request to the Indian Prime Minister last week. Sri Lanka Cricket will also support this project,” the Minister added. (Newswire)
