The Sri Lanka Navy has seized over 100 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (ICE) from a multi-day fishing trawler intercepted during a special operation off the western coast early this morning (12).
Acting on intelligence, a team of naval officers launched the maritime operation and took the vessel into custody within Sri Lanka’s western maritime boundary.
The intercepted vessel was brought to the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour by this afternoon, where a detailed inspection uncovered over 100 kilograms of heroin and ICE concealed within the vessel.
Six fishermen aboard the vessel, who are residents of the Dewundara area, were taken into custody. Investigations have revealed that the group had departed from the Trincomalee area for fishing activities.
According to the Navy, the estimated street value of the seized narcotics exceeds Rs. 2 billion.
The suspects and the stock of narcotics have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations. (NewsWire)
