The Ministry of Justice and National Integration has appointed a committee to initiate the process of repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). The decision follows a preliminary discussion held on April 11, chaired by Minister Harshana Nanayakkara.

President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatne has been named as the chairman of the committee. During the meeting, Minister Nanayakkara emphasized that repealing the PTA is a policy priority of the current government and stressed the need for a new law that balances national security with the protection of human rights and freedom of expression in line with the Constitution and international standards.

The committee has been instructed to finalize proposals within a short timeframe and to begin consultations with the public, civil society, and international stakeholders by early May.

Senior officials from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Public Security, Foreign Affairs, the Attorney General’s Department, Legal Draftsman’s Department, Sri Lanka Police, and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka participated in the discussion. (NewsWire)
