The Sri Lanka Police have launched an investigation into a dramatic incident in Kotahena on Friday (12), where officers opened fire on a suspect fleeing in a stolen vehicle.
According to the Police Media Division, the incident began when a man, accompanied by his pregnant wife and mother, had stopped his car near a restaurant in Kotahena to buy food. While the engine was still running, an unidentified suspect allegedly got into the vehicle and sped away, with the two women still inside.
Officers from the Mattakkuliya Police Station, who were in the area for an ongoing investigation, had received an alert regarding the stolen car and began pursuit in a cab. Despite being signaled to stop, the suspect continued to flee, prompting officers to fire two rounds from a service pistol.
The vehicle was eventually stopped near the Bloemendhal railway track in the Kotahena police division. The suspect managed to escape on foot, while the two women were found unharmed inside the car.
Kotahena Police have launched a search operation to apprehend the suspect and are continuing further investigations. (Newswire)
