The Police say legal action has been initiated against over 4000 motorists for traffic violations based on evidence obtained from CCTV cameras installed in Colombo City.

According to the Police, the motorists have been informed of their traffic violation via a letter sent to their residences, after which legal action has been initiated.

The initiative to identify traffic violations through CCTV cameras installed in and around Colombo City commenced on 1 February 2024.

As of 20 April this year, a total of 4,048 motorists have been imposed fines or legal action has been taken, they said.

The Sri Lanka Police says the program will be continued going forward.

A social media user had recently shared a letter issued by the Police regarding a traffic violation.

Referred to as the Traffic Rule Violation Notice, it is issued by the Police station in the area of the offence, the location, vehicle number, date, time, and the nature of the offence, along with an image of the vehicle involved.

The notice also contains acknowledgments of both the OIC of the Police Station in which the offence was recorded and the motorist. (Newswire)
