The Matara Magistrate’s Court today (April 25) ruled that Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon committed contempt of court by violating bail conditions during his release on April 10.
The court found that Tennakoon had brought a private vehicle into the court premises when leaving on bail, despite clear instructions not to enter the premises with a vehicle or use any security personnel. As a result, the Magistrate directed the Attorney General to file contempt charges against Tennakoon before the Court of Appeal, as the lower court does not hold the authority to proceed further.
Tennakoon had been released on bail in relation to a case over a fatal shooting near the W15 Hotel in Weligama on December 31, 2023, during which a police sergeant was killed.
Representing Tennakoon in court, President’s Counsel Anuja Premarathne argued that the IGP was unaware of the bail condition, as he was under remand custody at the time the court issued the order.
He claimed that the white vehicle was already parked outside and that Tennakoon entered it unknowingly. Premarathne added that there was no intent to disrespect the court and apologized on behalf of his client. (Newswire)
