A letter written by Titanic passenger Colonel Archibald Gracie just days before the ship’s sinking has sold for a record-breaking $400,000 at an auction in the UK.
The letter, described as “prophetic,” was purchased by an anonymous buyer at Henry Aldridge and Son auction house in Wiltshire on Sunday, fetching five times its expected price of $75,000.
Dated 10 April 1912, the day Gracie boarded the Titanic in Southampton, the letter contains reflections on the “fine ship,” with Gracie stating he would “await my journey’s end” before making a full judgment.
The Titanic sank five days later after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic, making the letter a rare and poignant artifact of the tragedy. (Newswire)
