More than 625 tonnes of waste had been brought to the Gohagoda landfill in Kandy following the ‘Siri Dalada Vandanawa’ special exposition.

Kandy Municipal Commissioner Indika Kumari Abeysinghe, during an inspection of the landfill, said steps would be taken to incinerate the waste with assistance from the Colombo Municipal Council.

Numerous public and private groups volunteered to clean streets heavily littered during the exposition of the sacred Tooth Relic, which was held for 10 days — the first such event in 16 years following a request from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The exposition drew thousands of devotees to Kandy.

The city is already grappling with ongoing waste disposal challenges, with limited landfill capacity and faced increased pressure on local infrastructure to manage such a large-scale event. (Newswire)
