Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has left the Bribery Commission after recording a statement for nearly three hours today.

Ranil Wickremesinghe appeared before the Bribery Commission to record a statement regarding his special statement on Badulla District MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, who is currently in remand custody on charges of financial misappropriation.

Speaking to reporters after recording his statement, the former President’s Attorney said Ranil Wickremesinghe had given a 10-page statement to the Bribery Commission today.

The Attorney further said that the former President had reported after receiving a summons from the Bribery Commission, adding, “he recorded a 10-page statement for nearly three hours. Bribery commission officials engaged with him in a cordial manner. Now it is over, and he left home.”

When inquired about the former President’s statement on remanded MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, the Attorney said it was made for the public to be made aware of the truth.

“Most government institutions which are allocated funds from the Central Government place the money in fixed deposits without utilizing it. A new law was introduced instructing unused funds to be returned to the government. The former President explained this to the Bribery Commission, for which he recorded a statement today.”

The Attorney also revealed that the former President has not been issued a summons to report to the Bribery Commission again on a future date. (Newswire)
