Vehicle importers and customers have written to the Sri Lankan Finance Ministry, urging immediate action to resolve the ongoing HS code classification issue affecting series hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Raize and Nissan X-Trail.

They noted that these SUVs include the latest hybrid technology, known as the ‘series hybrid system,’ which requires appropriate classification for customs clearance.

In their letter, the importers and customers pointed out that large number of vehicles remain stuck at the Colombo and Hambantota ports, with demurrage charges nearing Rs. 200,000 per vehicle per month due to administrative delays.

They further highlighted that the government had acknowledged the issue in early April and promised a swift solution, but no action has been taken to date.

Expressing deep frustration, the letter accused the authorities of prolonged inaction, warning that the delay is causing significant financial losses and eroding public trust in government institutions. They stressed that immediate steps are needed to prevent further economic damage and to protect both the vehicle industry and consumers awaiting their deliveries. (Newswire)
