The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered the release of Shashi Weerawansa on bail after she appeared in court in connection with her conviction for possessing an illegally obtained diplomatic passport.
Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former minister Wimal Weerawansa, was previously sentenced to two years in prison and fined Rs. 100,000 after being found guilty of the charge.
The order was issued when the case was taken up before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court to formally read out the sentence after the Colombo High Court upheld the Magistrate’s Court ruling.
Following Weerawansa’s appearance, the magistrate read out the sentence affirmed by the High Court. The court was informed that she had filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court decision.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Weerawansa be released on her previous bail, pending the appeal.
The case was ordered to be called again on Sept. 28. (Newswire)
