“No One Will Be Left” President AKD to Corrupt Opposition

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has claimed that if all alleged corruption and wrongdoing uncovered by the government were fully investigated, hardly anyone among those responsible would be left untouched, in remarks directed at his political opponents.

Addressing a public rally in Bulathsinhala, the President said the government had discovered the scale of alleged wrongdoing only after coming to power and examining state affairs from within.

“When we were outside, we spoke about corruption. But after coming inside and looking at what has been done to our country, when we unravel these things one by one, we see that our country has faced an enormous amount of wrongdoing,” Dissanayake said.

“If you look at the reality, it is almost to the extent that not a single person would be left,” he added, referring to those he accused of being responsible for past corruption and wrongdoing.

The President also said the government would proceed with constitutional and legal reforms despite opposition, claiming those who had benefited from what he described as a “black state” were becoming increasingly concerned.

He alleged that opponents of the government’s reforms were approaching foreign embassies and writing to international organisations.

“They should be worried. But remember, the decisions we take are carefully considered and taken on behalf of the people. We will not reverse any such decision,” he said.

Referring to the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, Dissanayake said the government would move quickly once the Supreme Court delivers its determination.

“Immediately after the determination, we will take it to Parliament and pass it,” he said.

The President also criticised delays in the justice system, arguing that in some cases judgments were delivered so long after the incidents concerned that the public had already forgotten what the cases were about. (Newswire)
