The experience and outcomes of Sri Lanka’s IMF-supported programme, with a particular focus on its seventh review, were discussed when an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation led by IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou met Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya at Parliament on Tuesday (22).
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Division, the discussions centred on the progress achieved under the IMF-backed programme and the lessons learned during its implementation.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister noted the progress made in managing the economy amid multiple challenges and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to maintaining economic stability while strengthening resilience against external shocks.
Reflecting on the Government’s two years in office, PM Amarasuriya described Sri Lanka’s engagement with the IMF as a positive experience characterised by open and transparent dialogue.
She also expressed appreciation for the IMF’s continued support for the Government’s efforts to move beyond economic stability and towards sustained economic growth.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of effectively managing external factors affecting the economy and said future engagement with development partners should focus on delivering sustainable, accountable and inclusive growth.
The discussion also covered proposed amendments to the Anti-Corruption Act, with attention drawn to the need to maintain an appropriate balance between privacy and transparency in information submitted to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) through asset declarations.
The meeting was attended by IMF Resident Representative to Sri Lanka Martha Tesfaye Woldemichael, Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Sagarika Bogahawatta and representatives of the Central Bank. (Newswire)
