A group of Swedish schoolchildren was introduced to Sri Lankan literature and culture through a special programme featuring the Swedish translation of Martin Wickramasinghe’s celebrated children’s novel Madol Doova, organised by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm.
According to the Embassy, the programme aimed to familiarise young Swedish readers with the literary work of Martin Wickramasinghe, widely regarded as the father of modern Sinhala literature, while providing an insight into Sri Lankan traditions and cultural heritage.
During the programme, the children were introduced to the story and its characters, as well as the cultural elements reflected in the novel.
Translator Priyanwada M. Banduwardana, who translated Madol Doova into Swedish, read a chapter from the book, followed by an interactive discussion with the students on the story, Sri Lanka and its culture.
The children also participated in a creative drawing session inspired by the novel, allowing them to explore its themes and characters through their own imagination.
The programme concluded with traditional Sri Lankan refreshments and Ceylon Tea, offering the young participants an opportunity to experience Sri Lankan hospitality and cuisine.
The Embassy said the initiative formed part of its ongoing cultural diplomacy efforts to promote Sri Lankan literature and art in Sweden, while strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries. (Newswire)
