Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) representatives have met United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Marc-André Franche as part of a series of discussions with members of the international community over what the party describes as growing concerns regarding democracy, the rule of law and judicial independence in the country.

SLPP politician Milinda Rajapaksha said the meeting was held yesterday (06) as part of ongoing discussions with ambassadors and representatives of the international community based in Colombo.

According to Rajapaksha, the SLPP representatives raised concerns over what they described as “systemic authoritarianism” and the potential impact of single-party dominance on democracy and judicial authority.

He said the delegation also briefed the UN Resident Coordinator on matters relating to the Krrish transaction case and another case concerning Airbus involving SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa.

Issues concerning overcrowding in prisons and alleged human rights violations within the prison system were also raised during the discussion, along with concerns regarding their impact on individuals the SLPP describes as political prisoners. (Newswire)
