The satyagraha campaign demanding the release of Ven. Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, which has continued at Colombo’s Viharamahadevi Park for the past 10 days, will be temporarily suspended following an intervention by the Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist Chapters.
Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thero said the decision was taken after the Chief Prelates informed the organisers in writing that they were taking steps to secure Ven. Gnanasara Thero’s release through discussions with the government.
Accordingly, the monks involved in the protest have decided to temporarily suspend the campaign while the Chief Prelates pursue discussions with the relevant authorities.
The satyagraha was launched to demand the release of Ven. Gnanasara Thero and has continued despite legal restrictions imposed on the protesters at Viharamahadevi Park. (Newswire)
