A nine-year-old girl who was hospitalized after being shot in Magulagama, Hettipola, on Thursday night has died, police said.
The girl and her grandmother sustained gunshot injuries and were admitted to Kuliyapitiya Hospital, where the child succumbed to her wounds. The injured woman remains under treatment.
According to investigations, the girl and her grandmother stepped outside their home after hearing people making loud calls to hunt wild boars when the shooting occurred.
Police recovered a 12-bore firearm used in the incident, but the suspect has fled the area.
Hettipola Police are continuing investigations to locate the suspect.
