Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has raised concerns over the rising number of shootings in the country, questioning the government’s response to violent crime.

Speaking in Parliament Premadasa said that 17 shooting incidents have been reported in the first two months of 2025.

The Opposition Leader criticized the government’s commitment to law and order, transparency, and public trust, arguing that the growing influence of organized crime and targeted assassinations has heightened public fears.

He further alleged that extrajudicial killings persist, suggesting that some murders may be attempts to eliminate criminal evidence.

Despite government assurances of due process, Premadasa questioned the enforcement of police protocols for handling suspects in custody.

Calling for a review of police circulars and legal procedures, he urged authorities to clarify their stance on the rise of criminal networks. He also stressed the need to investigate a potential conflict between the Inspector General of Police and the Police Commission. (Newswire)
