President Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced the construction of a river in Jaffna to comprehensively meet the clean water requirement of the northern region.
The President made the announcement at the opening of the Thalaiyadi seawater desalination plant today.
He said that the clean water requirement of the northern region will be addressed via the two initiatives.
The Thalaiyadi Sea Water Desalination Plant of the Jaffna-Kilinochchi Water Supply Project was inaugurated by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today.
The US$ 266 million Water Supply Project is financed jointly by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Sri Lanka.
It is expected to provide safe piped water to 186 Grama Niladhari Divisions by 2025 benefitting more than 300,000 people in 122,000 families in Northern Sri Lanka.
A first of its kind in Sri Lanka, the Jaffna-Kilinochchi Water Supply Project has been constructed on a greenfield site at Thalayadi, Vadamarachchi East DS Division, in the Jaffna District. (Newswire)
