The Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge, is currently affecting Sri Lanka’s weather, according to the Department of Meteorology.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island during the afternoon or night today.

Several spells of showers may occur in the North-western and Western provinces and the Mannar, Galle and Matara districts in the morning.

Heavy falls of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and North-central provinces and the Vavuniya, Mullaittivu and Kurunegala districts.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.

Winds will be south-westerly to southerly and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
