Sri Lanka would have received the third tranche under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) EFF programme if Ranil Wickremesinghe had been elected President, former Presidential Advisor Rosy Senanayake said.
Addressing a political rally, Rosy Senanayake said under the former government, Sri Lanka had been brought out of its crisis and had required only a bit more time to completely recover.
“Now we don’t have the third tranche under the IMF’s programme. It will be delayed, as the new Parliament has to be established and the government has to pass its budget,” she explained.
Stating that the authorities cannot mess around with the IMF, Rosy Senanayake said the IMF has put down conditions, which are only beneficial for the nation.
“The IMF requests to increase income, decrease expenditure, and eradicate corruption. The IMF has outlined a systematic process to help develop the nation through a government via good governance,” she said.
Rosy Senanayake questioned what the new government has achieved since the one month of assuming power, adding that they had only made false promises to be elected.
“The government has not received any money from private donors as claimed during the Presidential election. They have not reduced taxes and they will be forced to introduce more taxes in the future due to the loans taken as of now. They also have not received the third tranche from the IMF. This country is stranded because of their actions,” she added. (Newswire)
