National People’s Power (NPP) Leader, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed confidence in his party’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections.
Addressing party candidates, Dissanayake credited the NPP’s recent presidential victory to public trust, presenting the party as a force for reform against the country’s economic and political challenges. He said the NPP overcame significant obstacles, including media influence and state power used by the ruling establishment.
“The people placed their faith in us despite the ruling camp’s vast resources,” Dissanayake said.
He said strong political leadership is necessary to transform Sri Lanka’s current situation but warned that the three-member Cabinet, which includes himself, is not enough to drive the changes the country needs. He called for a strong mandate in the November 14 elections, asking voters to send a capable team to Parliament.
“To make our transformation agenda a reality, we need a strong political force in Parliament,” Dissanayake said.
He pointed out that previous administrations with parliamentary majorities, such as those of Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2010 and Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2020, ultimately failed to deliver effective governance. Dissanayake urged voters to prioritize the quality of representation over sheer numbers, saying the NPP’s candidates, though new to Parliament, are experienced in handling the country’s political challenges.
“Our candidates may be new to Parliament, but they are no strangers to the political challenges of this country,” he said.
Dissanayake also addressed public dissatisfaction with previous parliaments, describing them as corrupt and self-serving, and pledged that the NPP would work to restore public trust and clean up the political system. (NewsWire)
