Afternoon thundershowers expected in several areas today

Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in Sri Lanka after 1.00 pm today, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern and North-western Provinces and Puttalam and Trincomalee districts. 

Showers may also occur in the Western province and the Galle, Matara, Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the morning.

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the Island. Heavy showers are likely in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Colombo via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Winds will be North-westerly to Northerly in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, and North-westerly or variable in direction in the other sea areas around the island.

Wind speed will be 20-35 kmph, Wind speed can be increased up to 40-50 kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.

The sea areas extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara can be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate.
