A Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP has called for an investigation into the leaking of the confession made by the suspect arrested over the murder of a female university student in Colombo.
The body of the university student was found with cut wounds at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo earlier this week.
The woman’s 24-year-old boyfriend was arrested and remanded over the murder, while the Police had also found the knife used for the attack.
Following his arrest, local media published detailed reports of the suspect’s confession, along with information on his motive and plans to carry out the murder.
Speaking in Parliament today, SJB MP Rohana Bandara raised concerns over a confession by a suspect being leaked to the media.
MP Bandara requested the Speaker to inform Public Security Minister Tiran Alles to investigate how a confession made to the Police was leaked to the media.
Stating that such a confession is made in confidence to the Police and court, the MP pointed out that if such statements are leaked then the Police could be leaking other sensitive information as well.
Responding to the MP’s concerns, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that he will bring the matter to the attention of the Minister of Public Security. (NewsWire)
